Aravot is one of the four species (Arba Minim) used on the Jewish holiday (Sukkot) and is illustrated as a leafy bough of the willow tree. It is one of the species that is carefully chosen for the mitzvah or the commandment. The other three species are the lulav, hadass and etrog.

The aravot is characteristically grown from the surface of the river, usually in Israel. But so many people much prefer to grow aravot in their backyards and since this plant is hardy, the tree needs a lot of watering to grow. The aravot has no taste and no fragrance. According to some explanations, aravot represented the life of Joseph or a Jew with neither Torah learning nor good deeds. They are described as in similar in the shape of the one the human body organ which is the human mouth and in the harmony of the expressions of lips.

Two aravot or willow branches are required to use in one’s lulav and are used in sukkot. Typically, the willow branches are put on the left side while the hadassim is put on the right side.

The aravot requires a much more carefully handle in order for you to maintain its freshness and prevent it from drying out.

Another thing, for two or three days, the selected boughs are about to dry out. Therefore, it is a little bit difficult to keep them fresh as long as you want. That is why aravot is also considered as the most delicate species in the Arba Minim.  So in order for you to keep its freshness, you can wrap it in a towel that is moist or better kept it in the refrigerator.

Here are some of the most important things that you should keep in mind before purchasing and getting an Aravot or Willow branches:

  • The leaves of the aravot must be in elongated shape and have smooth and fine edges. The entire leaves should be fresh, not dried out and fully in green color.
  • You should make sure that the top of the willow branch and leaf is whole or intact, if it is not then it is totally invalid.
  • A perfect stem of the willow branch must be red in color and should be kept fresh.
  • A least or smallest span of 9.5 – 12 inches is the length of willow branches or a length of at least of three handbreadths.
